The Braidwood Garlic Growers Co-operative was started in 2017, growing out of the Garlic Project. It was formed to allow local growers to market their garlic as a group and take advantage of the strength of numbers. It accepts members from the Southern Tablelands of NSW.
Our climate is particularly suited to producing strong flavoured garlics suited to cold winters. These garlics are fabulous tasting varieties that you just won't find in the supermarkets. They include the Turban, Creole. Artichioke and Standard Purple Stripe groups. The soils and very distinct seasons found in the Southern Tablelands make the difference.
From frosty winter mornings to hot summer days, this area in the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales experiences real seasons year round. In the late afternoon, the 'Monga Mist' forms over the area and enables agriculture to thrive.

The Braidwood Garlic Growers Co-op has an educational garlic plot for members to learn how to grow garlic and to assist in funding the co-op. Having our own plot allows members to share information on growing without disrupting the bio-security plans of each of our growers.
Different varieties of garlic are grown in our plot and our co-op experiments with value adding to our garlic, assisting members to process their garlic in many ways and then marketing the resultant products.
The co-op also runs regular workshops to teach members about growing garlic and value adding and keeps considerable resources for members in our Log In section of our website.
We also assist members to source seed garlic, particularly seed that is acclimatised to our growing conditions. It can take any garlic up to 5 years to acclimatise to a locality. In the first year of planting the garlic may produce smaller bulbs than expected. As that garlic is used as seed in successive years, the quality of flavour and the size of the bulbs will increase, until the garlic's full potential is achieved.
